You wouldn’t believe what’s about to happen. On April 2nd, I’m releasing another book. Shocking, right?
Soul Caller, the name of the series and the first book, is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. I’m not just saying that because it’s one of the latest things I’ve written, either. Soul Caller is a different kind of story for me. It was a breath I took in the middle of this mad rush of adventure stories. There’s still plenty of adventure in it, but I began to see a connection with the world around me that really manifested itself in this story.
The inspiration behind Soul Caller, which I promise I’ll explain in a moment, was my childhood spent in places filled with rugged beauty. I grew up in West Africa, where the landscape is incredibly varied. From the coast to the mountainous jungle where I spent my early years, to the sub-Saharan Sahel, which is like savanna, and grassland in the north where I spent some of my later years, all are wildly beautiful. I remember countless times looking out over these varied landscapes and imagining the adventure that was just around the corner. Soul Caller was my opportunity to write that adventure.
The story follows a young man coming of age in his tribe. But when he goes to get his guardian spirit, there’s a mishap, and his whole world is thrown into turmoil. This is also a nod to my love of Westerns, and you might think of it as a story about cowboys and aliens invading a world to gather resources, and the struggle of the world’s inhabitants to reconcile and deal with this invasion. The main character, Merrick, encounters all sorts of foreign concepts and ideas. It’s about how he must adjust to understand his place in this rapidly changing world.
I think there’s a lot in the story that we can relate to. The last five years, really the last 15 years, have seen such unprecedented change in the world. I know I’ve certainly felt it. And it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In fact, life seems to be changing at an ever-increasing pace. The question of how we handle that, how we fit ourselves into this new world while keeping a firm grip on our principles and core beliefs, is so important. That’s what I hope to explore with this story. I hope to delve into those themes while also giving you a fantastic adventure.
As I mentioned, Soul Caller comes out on April 2nd (it might already be out by the time you’re reading this!). I’m so excited for all of you to read it. I would love it if, after you’ve read it, you could leave a comment letting me know what you thought.
